Q

What is the atom made of?

A

Protons & neutrons (nucleus) and electrons
If the charge is neutral, the atom has the same number of electrons and neutrons

6
Q

Why is the valence shell? Why is it important?

A

It is the last shell of an atom. If it contains electrons, they will be valence electrons. These determine the chemical behaviour of the element.

7
Q

What does a full valence shell mean?

A

This means the atom will not form chemical bonds with other ones. This is an atom’s goal in life.

Q

What is an ionic bond?

A

A bond that involves an atom donating electrons to another (usually 1 or 2) ex: NaCl

14
Q

Explain the functioning of a blood capillary

A

blood rushes in, plasma is pulled out of tiny openings, and pools around cells in the body. Cells take the nutrients in the plasma to feed.

16
Q

What is the particularity of an H-O bond?

A

The O is the most electronegative element and is partially negatively charged
The H is partially positively charged
This makes the bond extra strong
In a bond, electrons will circle the O more than the H

17
Q

What is a polar molecule?

A

Molecules that have partial charges created by electronegative atoms

18
Q

How do polar molecules interact?

A

They interact with each other to create weak hydrogen bonds (you can disrupt water with your fingers)
