Explain the language of ‘outward and ordinary’. (See WLC 154)
The outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicates to his church the benefits of his mediation, are all his ordinances; especially the Word, sacraments, and prayer; all which are made effectual to the elect for their salvation.
The things that are normally done, but have extraordinary power because Christ promised to work through them - ALL his ordinances, and especially the Word, sacraments, prayer
How does the Great Commission inform our understanding of the means of grace?
Christ is present with us
He promised to come to us in certain ways, exceeding the intrinsic value of the act itself
What is unique about the Reformed ‘means of grace’ as opposed to other traditions’ language?
Other language seems to convey that the practices shape us, but means of grace emphasizes that Christ communicates and acts
