Lesson 3 Flashcards
- What are the six characteristics of the Covenant with Noah according to Robertson?
1) Connection between the Covenant of Works and the Covenant of Grace (Example: multiply, have dominion & sustaining life for the Seed to come)
2) Particularity (Election according to grace (Gen 6:8)
3) Familial structure (The inclusion of the family in the covenant blessings)
4) Emphasis on preservation (in nature and capital punishment) with a foreshadowing).
5) The universality of the covenant, which “reveals knowledge” and preserves the gospel platform.
6) The gracious character of the covenant seen in the seal (seen over the throne of judgement in heaven).
- How is the Noahic Covenant a “bond in blood sovereignly administered?”
1) The promise of death for all mankind outside of the ark is implicit in the covenant.
2) Post the flood, the promise if the shedding of blood for murderers is the same.
3) It is also a bond, and sovereignly administered.
- What are the reasons Robertson gives for why the death penalty is still enforced today?
1) It preserves the sanctity of human life being in the image of God.
2) It curbs the overflowing of wickedness on the earth
3) It preserves the race itself for future multiplication.
- According to Ward, why did Adam not die immediately upon eating from the forbidden tree?
1) Adam immediately died spiritually and his body immediately came under the sentence of death.
2) He became liable immediately to eternal death in body and soul.
3) Immediate physical death was postponed in mercy, so that another covenant could be made, whereby he could have descendants, one of whom would be his Saviour, and the Saviour of all who believe.
- When is the first biblical usage of the term “covenant?”
Genesis 6:18
- How does the Noahic Covenant build upon and connect to the Covenant of Works?
1) Gen 9:1-2: “Be fruitful and multiply”
2) Gen 9:1-3 Have dominion over the animals.
3) Gen 9:6: Man being made in the image of God, like Adam.
- What is the three-fold promise formula that is found in the covenants?
1) You
2) Your descendants after you
3) Every living creature (Gen 9:10)/everyone in your tent (Gen 17)/All who are afar off whom the Lord our God will call (Acts 2:39)
