Lesson 2.3: Graphing and Application of Functions Flashcards
Vertical Line Test
A test that gives a quick and effective visual to decide if a graph is a function
Linear Function
specific type of function that represents the relationship between two variables, usually x and y
Function Notation
f(x); easy way to read and understand functions
Scale
numbers counted by on the graph
Independent Variable
x variable; variable whose values are independent of changes in the values of other variables
Dependent Variable
mathematical expression whose value depends on the independent variable; y variable = f(x) (“f of x”) depends on the value of x
Y-intercept
The y-intercept is where the relationship begins, when the input is 0.
Slope
The slant or steepness of a straight line.
Parallel Lines
lines with the same slope, but never meet, and have different y-intercepts
Perpendicular Lines
Intersect at 90 degrees and their slopes are negative reciprocals of each other.
Rate of Change
Tells how one quantity changes as the other changes.
Relate
To connect things together
Identify
to pick something out; say what something is
Appropriate
suitable or proper in the circumstances
Calculate
to figure out something mathematically
