Lesson 23 Flashcards

1
Q
  1. How does Deuteronomy parallel other ANE Treaties? What significance does this have for the date of Deuteronomy?
A

Covenants parallel other ANE treaties, especially the Hitties in structure:
1) preamble: identifies party
2) historical prologue
3) stipulations between Suzran and vassal
4) blessings and cursings
5) succession plan
6) duplicate copies deposited in sanctuaries of suzran and vassal

Sig for Date:
1) shows Deut is from the 2nd millennium, and not from the Assyrains in 600 BCE
2) SO, greater proof that Moses is the author

Q
  1. What are the traditional and critical views of Deuteronomy 12:5?
A

Duet 12:5 - where is the place of worship?

Critical:
-Deut was found during Josiah’s reign in 621 BCE, maybe for propaganda
-this verse is an allusion to the Jerusalem temple, the one place of worship
-all worship and sacrifice must be done in this place
-Problems:
1) the phrase “placing the name” is used in 2nd millenium in ANE
2) if it’s one place of worship, then Deut 27 contradicts it
3) Ch 12 in context is about the future land, so it is speaking of a future place

Traditional:
-Deut 12:5 refers to the tabernacle and to the future Solomonic temple
-place will change overtime, but when come into land, it will be Solomon’s temple
-so sacrifices in other places are permitted, until temple built

Q
  1. What is the relationsip between land, rest, and inheritance in the OT and NT?
A

OT: land, rest, and inheritance are combined together int he theocracy of Israel
-blessing: Promise land is rest and inheritance
-curse: lose land, so lose rest and inheritnace
-mission: focus on one place to fulfill God’s purpose

NT: these three are not tied together:
-land: no longer one place (Jn 4), mission is to the world
-rest: in Jesus, not in one place
-inheritnace: imperishable, not of this world

In OT, they were together. In NT, they are more separate. In new heavens, the spiritual and physical will be together fully.
