Lesson 2- What are factors affecting hazard vulnerability? Flashcards
1
Q
What factors increase increase vulnerability?
A
- Poorer quality of buildings
- Weaker systems of communications
- Limited funding pre and post disaster
- Lack of central coordination to plan for/deal with a disaster
2
Q
Whow is the number of deaths changing and why?
A
- 600 million people living in tectonically active areas of the world
- 500 million people at risk from volcanic hazards in 2000
- 200,000 people who have lost their lives as a result of volcanic eruptions in the last 500 years
- 1,000 deaths per year in recent years due to volcanic activity
3
Q
Why would people choose to put themselfs at risk from tectonic hazards?
A
- Personality-dogmatic
- Attitudes-always lived there
- Past experince-infrequency
- Values-religion
- Expections of the future
4
Q
Hazard risk
A
- The probability of hazard events occuring and creating loss of lives and livlihoods
5
Q
Hazard vulnerability
A
- How exposed you may be
-conditions of place
6
Q
What is the disaster risk equation?
A
- Risk=
frequency or magnitude x vulnerability/
capacity of population to cope
7
Q
Why are hazards increasing?
A
The unsustainable use of fossil fuels is warming the planet. The resulting change in climate is increasing the frequency and severity of weather realted hazards.
8
Q
Why is vulnerability increasing?
A
- Poor land use e.g building on flood plains, unstable slopes and coastlines. Envronmental degredation also contributes
9
Q
Why is capacity decreasing?
A
- Debt repayments, inequitable trade arangements, selective foreign investment and the redirection of aid funds towards geo-strategic regions mean that the pooresnt and most vulnerable countries lack the resouces to cope
10
Q
What is hazard perception?
A
- The way people perceive hazards
- Fatalism
- Domination
- Adaption
