What do serum bilirubin values mean?
Increase- suggests jaundice
What do serum albumin values mean?
Increase- dehydration
Decrease- liver disease, kidney disease, malnutrition, malabsorption syndromes, burn injuries
What do albumin/globulin ratio values mean?
Different from ratio- chronic inflammatory disease, multiple myeloma, autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis
What do alkaline phosphatase values mean?
Increase
-Liver diseases- cirrhosis, hepatitis, biliary obstruction
-Bone diseases- bone tumors, osteoporosis, rickets, Paget’s disease and hyperparathyroidism
-Other malignancies- leukemias and lymphomas
Decrease
-Disease- Wilson’s disease, hyperphosphatasia, cretinism, etc
-Blood disorders- pernicious anemia, aplastic anemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia
What do aspartarte aminotransferase or serum glutamic oxalocetic transaminase (SGOT) values mean?
Increase- liver diseases, alcoholism, myocardial infarction, kidney infections and disease
Decrease- congested liver, or in patients w/ high cholesterol levels
What do alanine transaminase or serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) mean?
Increase- liver disease
What do gamma glutaryl transferase values mean?
Increase- liver disease, cancer of the breast, prostate, and lung, pancreatitis, systemic lupus erythematosus
Decrease- log magnesium, hyperthyroidism, hypothalamic dysfunction
What do gastrin test values mean?
Increase- tumors, G-cell, hyperplasia, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
What do values for blood urea nitrogen (BUN) values mean?
Increase- kidney damage, low fluid intake, exercise, high protein intake, certain drugs, heart failure, intestinal bleeding
Decrease- low nitrogen diet, liver damage and malabsorption, poor diet
What do serum creatinine values mean?
Increase- decrease in filtration rate, kidney disease, muscle degradation, medication use
Decrease- liver disease, low muscle mass, pregnancy, protein starvation
What do uric acid values mean?
Increase- kidney disease, gout, parathyroid disease
What do BUN:Creatinine ratio values mean?
Pre-renal- cause- dehydration, hypoperfusion
Post-renal- cause- obstruction diseases such as renal calculi (kidney stones), strictures
Renal- cause- renal damage
