Q

What is digestion? (large to small)

A

process by which large, complex organic molecules called macromolecules (proteins, fats, carbohydrates) broken down into simpler, soluble organic molecules (amino acids, glucose, glycerol, and fatty acids) that are able to pass through the cell membrane

Q

Four Functions of Digestive System

A

(1) Ingestion and mastication of food

(2) The secretion of chemical substances that produce chemical changes in the food, making them soluble and diffusible

(3) The absorption of nutritive materials

(4) The elimination of undigested residues

Q

In Chinese Medicine, Qi can be split into two forms. They are:

A

(a) prenatal Qi - what we are born with

(b) postnatal Qi - energy we take from environment after birth, food and air we breathe

Q

Digestion begins in the mouth. What are the functions of digestion in the mouth?

9
Q

Discuss the importance of mastication.

A

-Only conscious part of progress, a.k.a. only part we are in control on

-Insufficient mastication interferes with entire digestive process.

-This is because not enough saliva gets mixed with the food, therefore mixed signals sent to stomach.

  • Stomach will not know appropriate types/amounts of gastric juices to secrete.
  • Saliva is under control of autonomic nervous system.

Q

Describe the two (2) Salivary glands, locations, and secretions.

A

(1) Parotid, upper jaw in front of ear, secretes serous

(2) Sublingual & Submandibular, Lower jaw, under tongue, and top of neck, secretes serous and mixed mucus

12
Q

What is ptyalin?

A

A digestive enzyme secreted by the salivary glands.

Ptyalin initiates the breakdown of starches (into dextrins and maltose)

Q

What is mixed mucous?

A

Called mucin, it helps lubricate the bolus (the chewed mass of food) for swallowing.

16
Q

The digestive system is made up of two main parts, what are they?

A

(1) Gastrointestinal (GI) tract (mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus

(2) Biliary System (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and bile ducts)

17
Q

List the digestive enzymes secreted by the stomach?

A
  1. Rennin
  2. Lipase
  3. Pepsinogen
  4. HCl
  5. Mucin
18
Q

What is rennin?

A

-digestive enzyme secreted by stomach
-clots milk

19
Q

Why is lipase secreted by the stomach?

A

-has weak fat-splitting action

20
Q

What is pepsinogen?

A

-digestive enzyme secreted by the stomach
-in presence of HCl, breaks proteins down into peptides

21
Q

What is hydrochloric acid (HCl)?

A

-digestive enzyme secreted by the stomach
-kills bacteria, renders some minerals suitable for intestinal absorption

22
Q

What is mucin?

A

-digestive enzyme secreted by the stomach
-protects the mucous membrane from its own secretions

23
Q

Describe the physical qualities of the pancreas.

A

-soft, yellowish, multi-lobed, glandular organ
-seven (7) inches long, 1.5 inches wide
-resembles dogs tongue

24
Q

What two things does the pancreas secrete?

A
  1. Digestive enzymes
  2. Insulin
25
Q

Some of the pancreatic enzymes need to be activated by __________ before they can properly carry out their functions.

A

bile

26
Q

List the digestive enzymes secreted by the pancreas.

A
  1. Water & Alkaline Salts
  2. Lipase
  3. Amylase
  4. Trypsinogen
  5. Trypsin
  6. Chymotrypsin
  7. Carboxypeptidases
  8. Nucleases
27
Q

Why does the pancreas secrete water and alkaline salts?

A

They neutralize the acid from the stomach.

28
Q

What is lipase secreted by the pancreas?

A
