Standard Dances
Latin Dances
are flowing smooth ballroom dances that move around the entire dance floor in a counterclockwise movement.

Foxtrot
a smooth progressive dance that travels around the line of dance. It is also considered as the “backbone dance” and the “mother of present-day dances” of the ballroom.
Waltz
The word “________” may be an African term for “reserved ground” or “closed space” or it may be from the Latin verb tanguere which means “to touch.” It is a sensual ballroom dance that originated in South America during the early 20th century.
tango
It is the first ballroom dance to be performed in the closed hold position. It is a rotary dance where dancers are continually turning either in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction and placing change steps at intervals to shift direction of rotation (reverse). It is also danced about twice as fast as the waltz.
Viennese waltz
It is an up-and-down, rise-and-fall swinging motion performed at a fast pace. Distinctive quickstep includes the following; lock step, rise and fall, running finish, natural hairpin, chasse, outside change, and hover corte. Jazz or swing with a brisk tempo is the music that usually used for quick step. It is a little faster than brisk walking, although it seems much faster for beginners.
Quick step
These dances stay in one place on the dance floor. They reflect the shift in rhythm of the music being danced and an energetic dance.
Latin Dances
It is a stepchild of the swing and also a derivative of the mambo. It is danced with a triple step and a break and check.
Cha-cha-cha
This dance was influenced by the African/American Swing, Boogie, Rock ‘n’ roll, and Lindy Hop. This dance originated in the US and it is a very happy and energetic dance with plenty of knee-lifting, rocking of hips, and bending.
Jive
during the 19th century, it is one of the five international Latin dances developed in Brazil. It is considered the dance of joy and celebration. A dancer of _______ in Brazil is called a sambista.
