LESSON 2 - Reading Texts Critically Flashcards
❖ Is the process of looking at a series of written
symbols and getting meaning from them.
❖ is seen as a comprehension process.
❖ is a receptive skill - through it we
receive information.
❖ can be silent (in our head) or aloud
(so that other people can hear).
READING
It is a more ACTIVE way of reading. It is a deeper and more complex engagement with a text.
Critical Reading
Two steps in preparing to read critically:
❖ Self-Reflect
❖ Read to Understand
PROCESS FOR READING
CRITICALLY?
Analysis,
Interpretation, and
Evaluation.
means looking at the parts
of something to detect patterns.
Analysis Asks: What are the patterns of the
text?
is reading ideas as well as
sentences.
Interpretation Asks: What do the patterns of
the argument mean?
is making judgments about the
intellectual/cognitive, aesthetic, moral or practical value of a text.
Evaluation Asks: How well does the text do
what it does? What is its value?
marking the pages
with notes, is an
excellent, if not
essential, way to
make the most out
of the reading
Annotating Texts
4 Ways of Annotating Texts
- Highlighting/Underlining
- Paraphrase/Summary of Main Ideas
- Descriptive Outline
- Comments/Responses
Key words and phrases or major ideas is the most common form of annotating texts.
Highlighting/Underlining
A series of brief notes in the margins beside important ideas
gives you a handy summary right on the pages of the text itself.
Paraphrase/Summary of Main Ideas
shows the organization of a piece of writing,
breaking it down to show where ideas are introduced, where they are developed, and where any turns in the development occur.
Descriptive Outline
You can use annotation to go beyond understanding a text’s meaning and organization by noting your reactions and ideas.
