Lesson 2: Properties of Amino Acids Flashcards
Why are they named derivative amino acids ?
Because they do not have a genetic code on our DNA.
What derivative amino acid acts as a neurotransmitter ?
y-amino butyric acid
GABA derived from glutamate
What amino acid is involved in the structure of keratin ?
not mentioned in the ppt but she mentioned it duering the lecture
Cystine
made of 2 cysteines
What molecule are hydroxy-proline and hydroxy-lysine found ?
Protein
ex: collagen (which is the main protein of the body)
What derivative amino acids function in the urea cycle ?
the urea cycle takes place in the liver
Ornithine and Citrulline
where is beta-alanine found ?
In the structure of vitamins
pantothenic acid
T/F
Aromatic AAs absorb UV light
True
wavelengths 280nm-380nm
AAs are soluble in ____solvents.
Polar
What event occurs when the AA is in an alkaline media ?
Low concentration of H atoms.
The COO- will donate an H atom (acting as an acid). Thus, the AA will become negatively charged and will migrate to the annode in the electric field.
What event occurs when the AA is in an acidic media ?
High concentration of H atoms.
The NH3+ will accept an H atom (acting as a base). Thus, the AA will become positively charged and will migrate to the cathode in the electric field.
What is the isoelectric point ?
When, at a specific pH, an AA carries a net charge of 0.
Where does the AA migrate to when it is electrically neutral ?
It does not move in the electric field.
Instead it precipitates
What are AA called when they are electrically neutral ?
Zwitter Ions. They are dipolar ions.
