- The individual constructs reality (become what you are)

A
- neurosis/anxiety/difficulties come from man losing sight of his own value
- Fulfillment comes from reconstructing your life
- Man is the measure of man

- Alfred Adler: determine a goal for your life and go after that. Problems come from lack of education. Life’s primary goal is to master love and work. (One of the first family theorist)
- Fritz Pearls: Gestalt Therapy - Awareness of self provides the goal.
- Karen Horney (Neo-Freudian) : goal is to develop an idealized image and move toward this

- ) Behavioral Approach - the counselor’s role is not to comfort, but confront (Jay Adams)
- ) Cognitive Approach - problems are the result of inappropriate thinking (Larry Crabb). One must change their beliefs to change their behavior. Its about the interpretation, not necessarily the reality of a situation.
- ) Affective Approach - They intervene at the self-level. Problems arise from a division between the desired self and the actual self.
