Lesson 2 - Neurones Flashcards
What are neurones
-they are specialised cells whose function is to move electrical impulses to and from the CNS, so caries neutral info throughout the body
-neurones must transmit info both within neurones and from one to the next
What is the structure of a neurone
-consists of cell body, dendrites and an axon
-dendrites at one end of the neurone receive signals from other neurones or sensory receptors
-impulses carried along axon to end of nerve where an action takes place
What is a sensory neurone
-they carry nerve impulses from sensory receptors to the spinal cord and brain
-convert info into nerve impulses and when this reaches the brain it translates into sensations
What is a relay neurone
-middle man which allows sensory and motor neurones to communicate
What is a motor neurone
-located in CNS and indirectly controls muscle actions
-when stimulated, release neurotransmitter that bind to receptors on muscle and cause muscle movement
