Lesson 1 - CNS And PNS Flashcards
Define CNS(central nervous system)
-composed of brain and spinal cord
-controlled by brain and connected to the spinal cord
-signals or messages(nerve impulses) from the nerves to the spinal cord then to brain and back again
Define PNS(peripheral nervous system
-composed of the branching web of nerves to all different parts of the body
-huge network of nerves that run from the spinal cord to all parts of the body
-controls breathing, heart rare, body temp and actions in stomach or intestine
What are the two main functions of the CNS
- Control behaviour
- Regulation of body’s physiological processes
-the brain receives info from sensory receptors and sends signals to muscles and glads via the spinal cord and nerve cells
What is the function of the spinal cord in the CNS
-relays info between the brain and the rest of body
-coordinates involuntary actions alongside the brain such as breathing
-connects different parts of the body to the brain
What is the occipital lobe
The occipital lobe processes visual info and is located at the back of the brain
What is temporal lobe
The temporal lobe processes auditory info(sound) and is located at the bottom of the brain
What is the pariental lobe
The pariental lobe integrates info from different senses and plays a role in spatial navigation and it is located at the top of the brain
What is the frontal lobe
The frontal lobe is associated with higher order functions such as planning, abstract reasoning and logic and is located at the front of the brain
What is the cerebellum
The cerebellum controls motor skills and balance whilst coordinating muscles to allow precise movements. It is located under the temporal lobe at the bottom of the brain
What is the somatic division of the PNS
It includes sensory and motor neurones. Sensory send messages to CNS and motor send info from the CNS back out - voluntary actions
What is the automatic division of the PNS
It is responsible for involuntary actions such as breathing and heartbeat
-has two divisions - sympathetic and parasympathetic
What is the sympathetic system in the PNS
It regulates organs and uses noradrenaline for a stimulating effect. Responsible for fight or flight
What is the parasympathetic system in the PNS
It regulates organs ad uses acetylcholine for inhibiting effects to relax organs after emergencies - slows heart and breathing rate
