Lesson 2: Network Layer, Routing & Addressing Flashcards
What does the network layer help with?
Packet delivery (addressing & path selection)
What does the packet header contain?
Information about the packet
What does the packet body contain?
Actual data being sent
What does the router do?
Determine the best route and send the packet forward
Are routers independent or dependent?
Independent, this is allows them to work simultaneously
How do routers decide which route is best?
Trustworthy
Distance
What is IP?
Internet protocol
Set of rules for routing and addressing packets
What are packets in a connectionless service called?
Datagram
What is a connectionless protocol?
No connection is established with the destination before sending
What matching criteria does a packet use?
Longest Prefix matching IP address
What are Virtual Circuits?
Connection Oriented & set up ahead of time
How are large IP datagrams fragmented?
1 datagram becomes multiple and they are reassembled at final destination.
How are fragmented datagrams helped to reorder on their final destination?
IP Headers
Who assigned IP’s?
IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority)
What are the 2 standards for IP addresses?
IP Version4 (IPv4)
IP Version6 (IPv6)
