What is biological classification?
the system of grouping living things into
categories based on a specific set of criteria
What is taxonomy?
the science of identifying and classifying all organisms (both living and fossilized species)
Prior to Linneaus:
- Species grouped together based on common physical and behavioural characteristics
- Placed in the same category (genus)
Binomial nomenclature
- First word is based off species genus
- Second word specific name
- Humans: Homo Sapiens
Taxonomic rank

Kingdom:
(6 possible) animalae, plantae, fungi, protista (colony of single cells), eubacteria, archaea
Phylum:
chordata vs. non-chordata (vertebrates or not)
Class:
mammalia, reptilia, aves, insecta
Order:
carnivores vs herbivores
Family:
same behavioral patterns – too many!
Genus:
first part of the binomial nomenclature
Species:
most specific unit of classification
