Lesson 2 Microscopy Flashcards
also known as the light optical microscope, uses visible light and a system of lenses to magnify the small images up to 2,000 times.
Optical microscopy
are family of tools used to make images of nanoscale surfaces and structures, including atoms.
Scanning Probe Microscopes
a technique for obtaining high resolution images of biological and non-biological specimens
Electron Microscopy (EM)
the electron beam passes through the specimen and is scattered according to the density of the different parts.
Transmission Electron microscope
provides vivid, sometimes startling, three-dimensional images of surface structure.
Scanning Electron Microscope
an instrument that is used to view magnified images of small specimens on a glass slide
Compound Microscope
part that is looked through at the top of the compound microscope
Eyepiece
holds & connects the eyepieces to the objective lenses.
Monocular or Binocular Head
Supports the microscope head and attaches it to the base.
Arm
Holds the objective lenses & attaches them to the microscope head.
Nosepiece
Bottom base of the microscope that houses the illumination & supports the compound microscope.
Base
There are usually 3-5 optical lens objectives on a compound microscope each with different magnification levels. 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x are the most common
Objective lenses
The object used to hold the specimen in place along with slide covers for viewing
Specimen or slide
Clips on the stage that hold the slide in place on the mechanical stage.
Stage clips
platform upon which the specimen or slide are placed
