Lesson 2 - Kinds of Variables Flashcards
A measurable characteristic,
image, perception, or concept,
capable of taking on different
values.
variable
Anything that may assume varied
numerical, categorical, or
experimental values.
variable
Anything that can VARY
variable
needed to understand
differences; they can affect or
change the results of a study
variable
Variables with values that describe a Measurable Numerical Quantity.
Numeric Classification
only take a finite number of numerical values and
assume any whole value from the defined limits of the variable.
Discrete Variables/integer variables
ex. class attendance, no. of children
Variables that can take infinite numbers on
the value that can occur within a population
Continuous Variables
ex. age, height, temperature
continuous: differences between two values
depict a meaning; has no clear definition of zero
Interval Variables
continuous: has a clear definition of zero, which
indicates that there is none of that variable
Ratio Variable
ex. weight, height, distance
Variables with values that describe a Quality or Characteristic of a data unit
Categorical Classification
A variable that has two or more categories
which can be organized and ranked.
Ordinal Variables
Variables with no quantitative value; does not imply ordering of cases for it is for classification and identification only
Nominal Variables
ex. (Learning styles, Language spoken, eye color,
blood type, business type, plate numbers, or religion)
Variables that represent only two categories
Dichotomous Variables
ex. true/false
Variable that have many categories
Polychotomous Variables
ex. performance level
Variables that determine Causal relationships
Experimental Classification
