Importance of Sir Charles Lyell?

A

- Theory that Earth’s surface has always changed and continues to change through similar, uniform and very gradual processes (1830)
Two significant conclusions:
that Earth must be unimaginably ancient
dramatic change could result over such extremes of time through slow, seemingly slight processes
