directs the AWA

conduct and supports medical research
Occupational health and safety program (OHSP)
a written statement in place to protect the employees who work with animals
Standard operating procedure (SOP)
an official detailed description of how each important procedure should be performed at the facility
center for disease control and prevention (CDC)
has established specific guidelines for the safe handling and management of infectious agents in the biomedical industry
Biosafety level 1
ordinarily do not cause disease in humans, may affect people with immune deficiency, no specific requirements for handling or disposal
Biosafety level 2
have potential to cause human disease if handled incorrectly, precautions will vary depending on the substance, general actions include: limited access to area, wearing gloves coats gowns face shield, use of class 1 or 2 biosafety cabinets, appropriate use of sharp containers, specific disposal and decontamination instructions
