Must be licensed, 4 years of education followed by 4 years in vet school, responsible for all medical decisions
Veterinarians
Prognosis
The likely outcome of a patient’s disease or condition
Study a particular aspect of vet medicine, meets extra educational requirements, are considered “board-certified” and referred to as Diplomates
Veterinary Specialists
Graduates of an AVMA accredited program, and must achieve a passing score on the VTNE, must be supervised by a licensed vet, have different terminology in different states

Specialized groups referred to as academies, may require extra educational requirements, earn the title of VTS with the academy denoted
Veterinary Technician Specialists
Typically supervised by a credentialed vet tech, can receive on the job training but are now expected to have higher education, programs that take 6-12 months and result in career diploma or certificate
Veterinary Assistants
Record keeping, inventory management, accounting, budgeting, client communication, personnel and regulatory matters, business background but may be trained on the job may be CVMP’s
