What is colonialism?
The building and maintaining of colonies in one territory by people from another territory
What is an empire?
A group of countries ruled by a single monarch ruling power (a lot of colonies)
What was the British empire?
The British began to establish overseas colonies in the 16th century. By 1783 Britain had a large empire, with colonies in America and the West Indies
When did the ‘first British Empire’ come to end?
after the American Revolution
What was the second British empire based on?
British sea-power, India, and huge conquests in Africa.

The use of economic, political, culture or other pressures to control or influence other countries, especially former dependencies.
