What are the economic characteristics of a superpower? (7)

A

USA is the largest trading partner for many countries exporting high value goods.
USA has dominance in innovation and intellectual property such as patents.
In 2013 21 of the top 100 TNCs belonged to the USA.
TNCs provide jobs, taxes and investment for the benefit country resulting in wealth.
Allows them to export their power further around the world.
80% of all financial transactions are in US dollars.
USA gives more money in emergency’s than anyone else.

A

UK has one of the largest networks of embassies.

Britain has often supported weaker countries against takeover by bigger countries.

What are the political IGO’s characteristics of a superpower? (3)

A

Intergovernmental organisations such as the IMF and World bank helped gain soft control.
IMF and World Bank often offer financial support to heavily indebted poor countries.
Bolivia gained support from them financially, but had to privatise their water supply which meant international TNCs took control of the water.

What are the military characteristics of a superpower? (5)

A

the US is unrivalled, in 2008 its military spending was over $700 billion, the EU as whole was just under $250 billion.
The US Military has a base on every continent besides Antarctica, reach places quickly.
US military also protects key shipping routes that the USA depend on for oil shipping.
Military force has been a major influence on political power historically, the UN Security council try to balance this but most have high military presence.
USA exercised hard power by confronting the Taliban.

A

Cultural Imperialism.
USA and British Empire have both been accused of this, the Empire imposed cricket, English Law and language on its colonies.
USA is accused of it by using English as the international business language.
