lesson 2 Flashcards
Anthropologists look beyond the confines of our own |
society and compare it to the beliefs and practices of |
other societies, past and present.
Cross-cultural or Comparative approach
This comparative emphasis is important. It helps
anthropologists to avoid equating what
“human nature,”
It focuses upon
both the biological and cultural evolution of human
beings and of human societies.
Evolutionary/ Historical approach
focused upon the
understanding of and description of patterns of change
over time.
Evolutionary/ Historical approach
It views human societies or
cultures within the context of larger natural systems
Ecological approach
the assumption that any given
aspect of human life is to be studied with an eye to the
way its related to other aspects of human life.
Holistic approach
This theoretical orientation views society as a complex
interconnected system of parts that work together in
harmony. *.. This approach points to the importance of
social structure, any relatively stable pattern of social
behavior.
structural Functional Approach
This theoretical orientation is considered a micro-level
approach, which is an individual level approach. The primary focus in this approach is communication and
exchange of ideas using symbols
symbolic ~ Interaction Approach
This theoretical orientation is considered a macro-level
approach that focuses on inequality.
Conflict Approach
It sticks to the political arena and to the realm of politics,
either dealing with situations with two competing
sides or the lateral decisions that affect the group as
a whole.
