Lesson 2 Flashcards
the restoration of the
individual to the fullest
medical, mental, emotional,
social, and vocational
potential of which he or she
is capable”
Rehabilitation
What to remember in physical reconditioning in copd patients?
Respiratory acidosis, SOB, increased ventilation, O2 consumption LIMIT PATIENT TOLERANCE
ACCEPTED benefits of exercise reconditioning
Increased physical endurance
Increased max O2 consumption
Increased activity levels with:
· decreased ventilation
· decreased VO2
· deacreased HR
· increased ventilatory threshold
POTENTIAL benefits of exercise reconditioning
· Increased sense of well-being
· Improve secretion clearance
· Increased hypoxic drive
· Improve cardiac function
Psychosocial Support includes addressing the?
· Social well-being
· Occupational retraining
· Job placement
Psychosocial Support is coordinated with an?
Occupational Therapist
PATIENT
EVALUATION
· Complete Hx
· Complete PE
· PFT
· CPET
PULMONARY FUNCTION
TESTING
• Ventilation
• Lung volume and capacities
• Diffusing capacity
• Prebronchodilator and postbronchodilator testing
PHYSIOLOGIC PARAMETERS
MEASURED DURING CPET
•Blood pressure
•Heart rate
•ECG
•Respiratory rate
•ABG/O2 saturation
•Maximum ventilation
•O2 consumption
•CO2 production
•Respiratory quotient
•O2 pulse (VO2: HR)
CPET procedure
> RELATIVE contraindications :
- Electrolyte imbalances (↓K, ↓Mg)
- Resting DBP >110 mmHg or resting SBP >200 mmHg
- Orthopedic impairment that compromises exercise performance
- SaO2 or SpO2 <85% (room air)
- Mental or cognitive impairment leading to inability to cooperate
CPET procedure
>ABSOLUTE contraindications:
1.) Uncontrolled cardiovascular conditions:
Acute myocardial infarction, Uncontrolled heart failure.
2.) Uncontrolled respiratory conditions:
Severe pulmonary arterial hypertension,
Uncontrolled asthma.
3.) Advanced or complicated pregnancy.
