Lesson 1 Flashcards
A program of education and exercise that focuses on restoring chronic respiratory patients to the highest
functional capacity possible.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
A comprehensive education and exercise program designed to improve the cardiovascular fitness of patients with known cardiac dysfunction.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
In what year did the > Council on Rehabilitation of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) presents general definition rehabilitation
1942
ACCP forms the commitee on Pulmo. Rehab.
1974
American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) forms its specialty sections, including the Continuing Care/Rehabilitation section.
1977
American Thoracic Society (ATS) Executive Commitee ACCP releases an official statement on pulmo. rehab (based on ACCP definition)
1981
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) is incorporated to continue the advancement of pulmo rehab
1983
Rationale for pulmi rehab.
This cycle is a consequence of inactivity produced by dyspnea resulting from chronic pulmo disease
Chronic Pulmonary Disease

Major goal of Pulmo rehab
Restore the patient to its highest functional capacity, given the patient’s degree of pulmonary impairment and overall life situation
2 principal objecrives of pulmo rehab
> To control and alleviate as much as possible the symptoms and pathophysiologic complications of respiratory impairment
To teach patient how to achieve optimal capability for carrying out their activities of daily living (ADLs)
4 pillars of pulmonary rehabilitation
- Education
- Breathing techniques
- Physical reconditioning
- Strategies for conserving energy and pacing activities.
