Lesson 17 Questions Flashcards
VOR & Intersection Holds
Are holds only performed over NAVAIDs?
No, not necessarily, they can really be performed anywhere that ATC tells them to be performed
What information must ATC provide you in a non-charted holding clearance?
- Direction of holding from the fix (as a direction N, NE, S, SE, etc.)
- Holding fix
- Radial, course, bearing, airway, route on which the aircraft is to hold
- Leg length in miles (if DME or RNAV is in use)
- Direction of turns if left turns are to be made
- Time to expect further clearance (EFC)
Should you accept a hold without an EFC?
a
What is the standard direction of turns in a hold?
Right turns, left = nonstandard
When should you begin a speed reduction for holding purposes?
Start the reduction when 3 minutes or less from the holding fix
What are the maximum holding speeds? (Be altitude specific)
Up to 6k: 200 KIAS
6,001 – 14,000: 230 KIAS
> 14,001: 265 KIAS
Name the three FAA recommended entry procedures into holds.
Parallel, Teardrop, and Direct
For our aircraft, what should the inbound timing be?
1 minute
When should the timing outbound begin?
Over or abeam the fix, whichever occurs later
You find that inbound wind correction of a standard hold is 7 degrees left. What should the initial outbound wind correction be? Why?
It should be 7 degrees right. On the outbound leg, you’re on the reciprocal heading, so the wind will be coming from the opposite direction.
When are holds used in instrument approach procedures?
Holds can be used in lieu of a procedure turn in some IAPs. Holds are also common aspects of missed approach procedures.
What is the difference between a Sectional, a TAC, and a WAC?
Sectionals use a one to 500,000 scale and are for slow-medium speed aircraft. TACs are only for high-traffic terminal areas and use a scale of one to 250,000 and are very detailed. WACs cover a large area, use a one to 1 million scale and are primarily for fast airplanes.
At what altitudes should you be using an IFR Low Enroute Chart?
Low enroutes should be used for IFR navigation under 18,000 ft.
How long do these stay current?
Charts are revised every 56 days
The US Terminal Procedures Publications (TPPs) include DP charts, STAR charts, some Airport Diagrams,
and ________ __________ procedure charts. For how long are these current?
Instrument approach procedure charts. These are current for 56 days
