Mechanistic and Organic Design
Mechanistic design
primarily hierarchical in nature, interactions and communications are mostly vertical, instructions come from the boss, knowledge is concentrated at the top, continued membership requires loyalty and obedience
* ideal for “slow technology

resembles a network that are more lateral, knowledge resides wherever it is most useful to the organization, and membership requires a commitments to tasks of the organization.
- it is faster in reacting to changes

old, very large firm operating in a simple and stable environment with several diverse markets

Adhocracy
found in young organizations engaged in highly technical fields
* Decisions: spread throught organization
* Power: given to experts
