Lesson 14 Flashcards
What is sonar waves an acronym for, and what do they allow scientists to do?
Sound navigation and ranging, they help scientist use noise to bounce off of mountains and the bottom of sea floor.
How do scientists use earthquake S and P waves to determine the earths innermost layers?
P Waves travel through liquid and solids, but S waves will not travel through liquid. This proves some of the innermost layers are different compositions.
How thick is the crust? Where is it located?
2-40 miles, and first layer.
Where is the outer core! What’s it made of?
It’s liquid, iron and nickel. It’s 2nd most innermost.
How is the inner core different that than the outer core?
It’s a solid iron and nickel. The exact central core is nickel.
What is the lithosphere a combination of?
The crust and the rigid mantle.
How deep is the innermost core?
4000 miles
What is the asthenosphere
The non rigid mantle, it can move, flexible. Very hot.
What is the contenential crust made out of? The ocean crust?
Basalt has a very high density.Ocean crust: basalt. Continental: granite.
What can the tectonic plates do?
Sections can move, but the movement is Minimal.
What is it called where the ocean crust separates from the upper mantle?
Disontinuinity
