Union economique de l’habitation, year and function?

Le 30 mars 1940, Joseph-Auguste Gosselin, l’avocat Philippe Ferland et le professeur Lorenzo Dallaire fondent l’Union économique d’habitations (UEH) avec pour “aviseur moral”, le père jésuite Jean-d’Auteuil Richard. Cette initiative fait suite à l’échec de lancement d’une cité-jardin à Québec par J.-A. Gosselin en 1939. À l’origine, l’UEH désire construire des cités-jardins ouvrières à travers tout le Québec, s’inspirant des premières cités-jardins du début du XXe siècle. Un des désirs des promoteurs du projet est de voir la classe ouvrière accéder à la propriété. Toutefois, le projet n’aura pas le succès escompté puisqu’une seule cité-jardin sera partiellement réalisée, soit la cité-jardin du tricentenaire dans le quartier Rosemont à Montréal. Seulement 167 des 300 maisons visées seront construites entre 1940 et 1947. De plus, la majorité des maisons de ce projet seront achetées par des gens exerçant des professions libérales et par la nouvelle classe moyenne. Le mouvement Desjardins sera impliqué financièrement dans ce projet ainsi que plusieurs communautés religieuses et les jésuites tout particulièrement. Des dissensions internes avivées par des difficultés de financement mèneront l’UEH à mettre sur pied en 1947, un Comité de réalisation qui, dans les faits agira en tant que Comité de liquidation. Petit à petit, ce comité vend les maisons et cède les rues et dépendances à la Ville de Montréal en 1948. L’UEH disparaît en janvier 1964.
