Lesson 1.3 and 1.4 Flashcards
What is the motherboard and what is its purpose?
The computer’s primary circuit board and many components of a computer are directly connected to it.
What is the SSD/solid state drive/s purpose?
The SSD are integrated circuit assemblies as memory to stores data persistently.
What is the Power supply unit’s purpose?
Gives a computer power by converting all purpose electric current into direct current to be used by the computer components.
What does the CPU or central processing unit do?
The part of the computer that executes software program instructions.
What do video cards/graphic cards do?
Process the graphic output from the motherboard and sends it to the display.
What is the computer’s fast storage area and what does it do?
It is called RAM (random access memory) and it is directly accessible by the CPU. It stores the current program and immediately needed data.
What does the audio card do?
Control the input and output of sound from and to a computer.
What is the purpose of optical drivers?
It is a data storage system that is accessed by by scanning disks using a laser diode.
A network interface controller (NIC, or LAN adapter)’s purpose?
To connect the computer to a network.
What do port cards do?
Serve as an interface between the computer and other peripheral devices. Ex. a usb cable connects a printer to the computer.
How are Software and Hardware connected?
Software tells hardware what to do.
How and by whom is software created?
Software developers create software through programming.
What is operating systems?
Operating systems manage hardware and create the interface between hardware and the user.
What is Application software and what does it do?
Category of programs that do something useful for the user. It just used to accomplish a specific goal such as calculations.
What 3 things do operating systems need to do?
- manage the hardware of a computer
- provide the user-interface components
- provide a platform for software developers to write applications
