lesson 13 Flashcards
consists of hardware & software components that work together to run the computer
computer system
what are the 3 parts of the computer system?
hardware, software, and peopleware
refers to he physical or tangible parts of the computer
hardware
a program which consists of a set of instructions that guides the computer hardware to operate effectively
software
what are the types of hardware?
input devices, processing devices, storage devices, and output devices
what are the two types of input devices?
keyboard entry & direct entry
is probably the oldest and most common example of an input device
keyboard
data that does not require to be keyed or pressed into a keyboard
direct entry
uses a concentrated beam of light of a tiny laser, are called optical mice
mouse
a special type of monitor which allows you to click objects on the screen by touching the screen with your finger
touch screen
also known as a touch pad, this is a touch sensitive pad for controlling the cursor
glide pad
uses a scanner which is an electronic deice that converts pictures or printed text into digital format
scanning device
also known as the speech or voice recognition system. through the use of a microphone, the user can send audio signals to a computer for processing, recording, or carrying out commands
voice input device
all the other parts of a computer must be connected in one way or another to the cpu
system unit
there are the parts located inside the system unit
internal
these are the parts located outside the system unit
external part
this is where the compact disk (CD) is inserted
cd-roms or dvd rom drive
stands for LIGHT EMITTING DIODE. a power indicator (or hdd activity light, ram activity light, diagnostic light) found in front of the system unit
led
used to turn the computer on and off
power switch
used to restart the computer without turning it off
reset switch
is where the usb stick is inserted
usb port
are slots located at the back of the system unit where cables are plugged
ports
also called the main board or the system board
motherboard
one of the most important parts, known as a microprocessor. the brain of the computer
CPU (central processing unit)
located on the motherboard, this is where expansion cards are inserted
extension slots
an adapter card used to process and display information for the monitor
video card
a special type of power transformer, converts the standard voltage of your original outlet into either 5- or 12- volts dc
PSU (power supply unit)
like a television or CRT (cathode ray tube) that displays data from your computer
monitor
displays the image on a wall sized screen
LCD (LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY) projectors
is similar to a touch screen that has a display screen which is a touch sensitive transparent panel covering the screen
smart board
a device that prints images or pictures
printer
produces the sound generate by your computer
speaker
internal storage that holds data and instructions that the computer follows to perform commands.
primary storage or main memory
one of the key items that influences the overall performance of the computer
RAM (random access memory)
also known as non-volatile memory. it is programmed with the software “basic input/output system”
ROM (read only memory)
refers to the different storage media on which a computer can store data and programs
secondary storage
