Lesson 12 - Paint Flashcards
a liquid surface coating. On drying, it forms a thin film on the surface.
These are classified as oil ___ , water ____, cement ____, bituminous
_____ and special ____ such as fireproof ____, luminous ____, chlorinated
rubber _____ (for protecting objects against acid fumes)
Paint
FUNCTIONS OF PAINTS
- To protect the coated surface against possible stresses-mechanical or
chemical; deterioration-physical or environmental - Decorate the structure by giving smooth and colorful finish
- Check penetration of water
- Check the formation of bacteria and fungus, which are unhygienic and
give ugly look to the walls - Check the corrosion of the metal structures
- Check the decay of woodwork and to varnish the surface to display it to
better advantage
BASIC COMPONENTS OF PAINT
- BASE
- FILLER
- VEHICLE
- THINNER
- DRIER
- COLORED PIGMENT
a solid substance in a fine state that forms the body of paint. It forms
the bulk of the paint. It conveys the character of the painting. It usually consists of white lead, red lead, zinc oxide (zinc white), iron oxide, titanium white, aluminum powder, and lithophone. The main function of all these materials is to make a film of the paint opaque, harder and elastic & prevent the formation of shrinkage cracks
Base
It is cheap pigment added in a paint to make it more economical. The main function of it is to modify the weight of paint & makes it more durable. used to impart various physical properties (color, opacity or texture), or simply to make the handling of paint better
INERT FILLER OR EXTENDER
It is the oil to which the base is mixed. It is the liquid substance which holds the
paint together & also binds it is the surface that is to be painted. It simply means it provides the durability, toughness and waterproofness to the
paint. It also helps to spread the paint ingredients uniformly over the surface to be painted.
VEHICLE OR BINDER
The oil can make the paint thin and increase the spread. makes the paint workable and evaporates during the drying of the paint film
These are usually volatile substance that provide properties such as
smoothness, easy flow, and brush-ability.
SOLVENT OR THINNER
The function is to accelerate the process of drying. It absorbs oxygen from the air and transfer it to the vehicle in the paint
film, which in turns get hardened.
It may be either in the form of soluble or paste state.
DRIER
Used to hide the surface imperfections
They are coloring materials added to the paint to impart the desired shade &
color.
They protect the paint film by reflecting the ultra violet light.
They also improve the impermeability.
COLORING PIGMENT
TYPES OF PAINT
- Wood – Enamel
- Concrete and Masonry – Latex
- Metal – Acrylic
- Varnish
A durable oil based paint based on natural ingredients and renewable
resources. Used for finishing exterior and interior surfaces including: wood
surfaces (doors, walls, windows, etc.)
Surface Preparations for Wood surfaces includes sanding, nail-setting
ENAMEL PAINTS
ENAMEL PAINTS
Primer: Flat Wall Enamel
First/Second Coating: Semi-gloss Enamel/Gloss Enamel
Thinner: Paint Thinner61
A type of paint used for walls consisting of pigment bound in synthetic ____
that forms an emulsion with water.
Surface Preparations include plastering, application of neutralizer and putty
LATEX PAINTS
LATEX PAINTS
Primer: Flat LATEX
First/Second Coating: Semi-gloss Latex/Gloss Latex
Thinner: Water
A fast-drying paint made of pigment suspended in ____ polymer emulsion.
These are water- soluble, but become water-resistant when dry.
Surface Preparations includes sanding, application of neutralizer and rust
converter.
ACRYLIC PAINTS
