11.1 - Universal Testing Machine Flashcards
is named as such because it is a great multi-purpose
instrument that can perform many different varieties of tests on an equally diverse range of
materials, components, and structures.
Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
measures how strong it is, how stretchy it is , and how stiff it is
Tensile Test
The exact opposite of a tensile test.
- where you compress an object until a certain load or distance has been
reached or the product breaks
Compression Test -
- Similar to a tensile test
- you pull apart two materials that have been bonded together
Adhesion Tests (Peel test)
a compression test where you support a length of material by spanning it across two supports on each end
Bending Test
What are the samples that can be tested?
- Rope
- Steel Rope
- Winches
- Steel Wire
- Electrical Wire
- Webbing
- Spring
- Slings
- Cable
- Nylon Rope
- Links
- Chain
- Steel Chain

10 Metal Sheet
11 Baseplate
12 Grip Control System
13 Control Processing Unit
(CPU)
14 Computer Monitor
15 Printer
16 Power Switch
17 Emergency Stop
18 Digital Controller
- The topmost part of the UTM
- It is fixed
Upper Crosshead
Used to grip the upper end of the sample
Upper Grip
Used to adjust the position of the lower crosshead
Screw
- Used to grip the lower end of the sample
- Together with the lower crosshead, it moves downward during tensile and peel/adhesive test
Lower Grip
Supports the test frame
Column
- Lower head of the UTM and is one of the important parts
- Has upward and downward movement
Lower Crosshead
It is where compression and bending tests take place
Press Plate/Compression Plate
Put the compression and bending test fixtures
Working Table
