Lesson 11: Verb groups, ar endings and it Flashcards
what are the three forms of verbs
All Spanish verbs end one of the following aways
ar - tolerar (to tolerate)
er - comer (to eat)
ar - venir (to come)
when saying the first person, what do you need to remember to conjugate (unless it’s an irregular one)
and what is to note when pronunciating it
we take off the ‘ar’, ‘er’ or ‘ir’ - add an ‘o’ - and to have the ‘I’ version.
the accent is going on the penultimate syllable. If you leave the accent on the last syllable (as you pronounce it in the ‘to’ form) you change the meaning.
tolero - I tolerate
which verb ending is the biggest group ‘ar’, ‘er’ or ‘ir’
Ar
In fact any new verbs which come into the language are always ‘ar’ verbs
e.g. Twittear
form for he/she/it/you
how to congugate?
iliminar
iliminar
ilimino-me
ilimina- he/she/it/you
what’s a way of saying “it lasts a lot”
Durar mucho
(duration)
what does mastication mean
to chew
ends in -tion so can be a verb Masticar
ellos/ellas/Uds
this is : they/you (plural)
this doesn’t exist in english. how does this work and what’s important to remember in spanish?
Yes, OK, ‘you plural’ is something that doesn’t exist in English but if you are talking to more than one person in Spanish the verb ending changes. The best way to demonstrate it is:
You informal singular - “Are you going?”
You formal singular - “Is sir going?”
You formal/informal plural - “Are you guys going?”
The ‘you plural’ form can be used in both formal and informal situations
for hablar, how do you conjugate to : you (informal)
Hablas
what does the following mean
Lo
Los
La
Las
Lo (him/it)
Los (them)
La (her/it)
Las (them)
Lo
Los
La
Las
where to put these words depend on the form of the verb, what are these?
the ‘to verb’ - hablar (to speak).
the ‘changed verb’ - hablo (I speak)
Lo
Los
La
Las
where to put these depends on two forms of the verb
1) the ‘to verb’ - hablar (to speak).
2) the ‘changed verb’ - hablo (I speak)
For no 2, where do they go?
If we are using a changed verb then lo,la,los, las must come before the verb.
Lo quiero (I want it)
Lo
Los
La
Las
where to put these depends on two forms of the verb
1) the ‘to verb’ - hablar (to speak).
2) the ‘changed verb’ - hablo (I speak)
For no 1, where do they go?
can come at the beginning or at the end - we can choose.
I want to see it:
Lo quiero ver
Quiero verlo
I must invite him
- Debo invitarlo
- Lo debo invitar
We do the same thing in English - “Him I must invite” and “I must invite him”. The first puts more emphasis on the importance of inviting ‘him’. In Spanish the two different ways are equal in meaning and emphasis.
