Lesson 11: Network Management Flashcards
The ability to track various
events on a network.
accounting
A useful piece of documentation
that provides a representative sample of
how the network is working at a specific
point in time.
baseline
A type of signaling fault that
occurs when one or more bits in a
particular packet or frame, but not the
entire packet, are lost.
bit error
The preset minimum below which
the network administrator can guarantee
that data will not flow.
bit rate
A component of a network
optimization system that determines
what content to send to the
server. It also checks the caching server
for a copy of requested content before
going to the original source if a copy is
not there.
caching engine
A network server that
stores a local copy of content requested
from another source (such as an
Internet server) and retains it for a
specified amount of time.
caching server
Allows multiple devices in a
common pool to use the same IP address.
CARP (Common Address Redundancy Protocol)
The organization of
a network into divisions, designed in such
a way that if one section of a network is
brought down, the other sections of the
network will not be directly affected.
compartmentalization
A type
of software designed to monitor network
connections.
connectivity monitoring software
Any type of software
that e~bles a computer to connect
to a network or another computer,
either remotely or locally.
connectivity software
Events, conditions, and limits in
a network that contribute to the slow
delivery of data, called latency.
delays
Paper or digital records
of what devices and cables you have on
your network, how the network is configured,
where it is located, and policies
and procedures used to manage and
maintain the network.
documentation
The amount of rime a network
and/or network device is not functioning.
downtime
Software applications intended
to both entertain and educate the
people who use them.
edutainment
Data files that a system uses to
record errors, warning, and informational
messages generated by operating
system components or applications.
event logs
An application or component
found on all current versions of
Windows that centralizes all event logs
on a local computer.
Event Viewer
A network’s ability to have a
portion of itself fail but to still continue
to work at some level of functionality.
fault tolerance
A goal or concept in
network optimization that refers to
the ability to keep a network up and
running reliably with the least amount
of downtime possible.
high availability
A network
application that requires a lot of
bandwidth to function.
high bandwidth application
Data files that contain an
ongoing record of the activity in a
specific device or on the network.
history log
The difference in the amount of
time that two packets take to reach the
same destination due to network delays.
jitters
The time it takes a data packet
to move from one designated network
location to another.
latency
A measurement of how
well a program or network device can
handle latency.
latency sensitivity
