You do this through self discovery and self acceptance.

Expectations place on you that are unrealistic
Self -Fulfilling Prophecy
- Self -belief - I’m okay vs I’m a failure.
- Feelings - I can do it vs I can’t do anything.
- Behaviour- I will do it vs I don’t do anything.
- Feedback from others - you did it vs she can’t do anything.
Congruence
Self concept corresponds with potential self and you’re comfortable
Incongruence
Expectations of self doesn’t fit self concept.
Leading to anxiety, feelings of denial
Denial ignoring your feelings
Distortion: turning an experience into something it wasn’t.
The Role of Client-Based Therapy
Focus is set by client
Encourages them to find their true self.
Accept weaknesses and strengths.
Rogers: “ all people are essentially good yet experiences shape your behaviour.
Relevant for teaching:
Building a child’s self esteem
Encourage
No fake praise
Discourage perfectionist attitude.
