Lesson 1 - Tissues Flashcards
epithelial tissue
protective lining for the surface of the body and internal surfaces of cavities
- superficial layer of mucous membranes and cells that make up skin
- tight, compact sheet
- protective barrier keeping whatever is covered from seeping out and keeping foreign material from getting in
connective tissue
supportive tissue
muscular tissue
tissue capable of contraction
neural tissue
specialized to transmit information
simple epithelium
single layer of cells
- ex: heart lining, nasal cavities
compound epithelium
different layers of cells
- pharynx, etc
basement membrane
collagen, joins tissues together
areolar connective tissue
- supportive
- loose, connective, elastic
- found between muscles and supports organs
adipose connective tissue
- fat cells
- found between muscles and organs
white fibrous connective tissue
- strong, dense, highly organized fibers
- found in ligaments that bind bones, periosteum, covers organs, fascia over muscle
yellow elastic connective tissue
- elastic
- found in areas that recoil
- cartilage, pinna, ear, nose
lymphoid connective tissue
- specialized connective tissue
- found in lymphoid tissue of tonsils, adenoids, and lymph nodes
- adenoids can cause ear, speech problems if swollen
blood
- red & white blood cells
- blood plasma is the liquid component of blood
bone
- hardest connective tissue
compact bone
dense, gives bone its smooth, white appearance
