Lesson 1 - Anatomical Terms Flashcards
anatomical position
body is erect and the palms and arms face forward
frontal section
division of the body into front and back sections
midsagittal section
cut the body into left and right HALVES
sagittal section
any cut that divides the body into left and right portions; doesn’t have to be exactly equal portions
transverse section
a cut that produces upper and lower halves of a body
anterior
“front of” and used to describe front surface of body
ventral
front surface of body
posterior
“toward the back” for dogs and humans
dorsal
“back” as in a dorsal fin on a fish; synonymous with posterior
rostral
toward the head
caudal
toward the tail
peripheral
placed away from the center of the body
superficial
confined to the surface
deep
closer to the central axis of the body. “deep to one another” = closer to body’s or limb’s center
distal
away from midline
medial (or mesial)
toward midline
superior
above, farther from the ground
inferior
below, closer to the ground
prone
lying on belly
supine
lying on back
lateral
to the side; describes relationship between limbs & trunk
proximal
near, or approximate; describes relationship between limbs & trunk
axial skeleton
head and trunk, with spinal column being the axis
appendicular skeleton
lower and upper limbs
neuraxis
axis of nervous system, including spinal cord, brainstem and cerebrum
flexion
bending at a joint, usually toward ventral surface; ex: sit ups
extension
act of pulling two ends farther apart; ex: completion of sit up returning to extended condition
plantar
sole of the foot, the flexor surface
plantar flexion
rise on toes, extending foot
plantar grasp reflex
stimulation of the sole of foot causes the toes of the feet to “grasp”
inversion
turning the sole of foot inward
palmar
palm of the hand, the ventral (flexor) surface
pronated
palmar surface is directed inferiorly
supination
rotating hand so the plantar surface is directed superiorly
thorax
chest
abdomen
front abdominal wall
dorsal trunk
the back
pelvis
hip bones
cranium
part of the skull that houses the brain
upper extremity
arm, forearm, wrist, and hand
lower extremity
thigh, knee, leg, calf, ankle, and foot
