LESSON 1: INTRO TO SURVEYING Flashcards
Defined as the science of gathering information about the
physical Earth.
Surveying
Another term for Surveying
Geomatics
It includes the measurement of distances and determining relative positions of points on or beneath the surface of the earth or establishing the points.
Surveying
This type of survey relates to laws of land of ownership.
Cadastral Surveys
They are often called “stake-out”, “lay-out” or “setting out”. It is an essential part of construction that is performed to establish reference points and markers that will guide the construction.
Construction Surveys
Includes mapping of bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, etc. It also includes measurement of features such as discharge, etc.
Hydrographic Surveys
Practice of determining the relative positions of points on or beneath the surface of the earth by direct or indirect measurements of distance, direction & elevation
Mine Surveys
Obtains reliable spatial information from photographic images (may it be aerial or terrestrial)
Photogrammetric Surveys
Provides data needed to determine horizontal and vertical alignment, and even earthwork qualities, for the design of linear structures such as roads, railways, pipelines, etc.
Route Surveys
A sub-discipline of surveying that requires high accuracy and precision. It includes alignment of machineries and optical
tooling.
Industrial Surveys
Used to map natural and/or man-made features on the ground and obtain elevations.
Topographic Surveys
These are caused by environmental conditions or significant
changes in environmental conditions.
Natural Errors
These are caused by imperfectly constructed, adjusted, or
calibrated surveying equipment.
Instrument Errors
These are caused by physical limitations and inconsistent setup and observation habits of the surveyor.
Human Errors
The difference between a measured value and its true value
