Q

What does the ICT sector do?

A

Produce goods or services AND/OR
Supply technologies that:

  • process,
  • transmit, and
  • display

data or information

The services sector is the fastest growing part of the industry (analyzing and implementing information systems)

  • The closest related sector to the use of IS in Canada
  • seen as a “hidden” industry

In 2016 ICT sector accounted for 4.4% of national GDP ($181 billion in revenue).

E.g.: percentages are the amount of companies out of ICT that are in that subsector
- software and computer services (89.2%)
- cable and other program distributors
- telecommunication services (3.3%)
- ICT manufacturing (2.5%)
- ICT wholesaling (5%)

Most companies have between 1-9 employees in this sector (86% of companies)

Q

IS

A

Information Systems

A group of components that interact to produce information.

Not necessarily technology related! Could be the Dewey decimal system.

(used to foster innovation in organizations, and thus leads to higher paying jobs in this sector since you need a high level of skill in this industry)

Q

IT

A

Information Technology

The products, methods, inventions, and standards that are used for the purpose of producing information.

  • raw technology concerning only hardware, software, and data components of an information system and how they are networked together

10
Q

How is IS different from IT?

A

IS includes people and procedures, IT does not.

IT by itself will not help an organization achieve its goals and objectives. We need to embed IT within the IS in order to make proper use of IT.

Q

How do successful business professionals use IS?

A
  • consumers expect free, perfect, now, so business professionals use IS to help achieve those goals
  • know how to use more advanced software such as:
    1. project management software (Microsoft Project, Open Project)
    2. business graphics (MS Visio, SmartDraw)
    3. collaborative systems (Google Docs)

Q

What fundamental changes can technology bring to an economy, organization, or individual?

A
  • humans may not be needed if technology takes over ? Not really, but an idea that business students must be able to understand
  • organizations have to adapt faster than before since technology is changing so quickly
  • individuals have to be able to process a lot of data since their phones are on them at all times

Q

Five-component framework

A

The five fundamental components of a computerized information system
1. computer hardware,
2. software,
3. data,
4. procedures, and
5. people

—that are present in every information system, from the simplest to the most complex.

  • linked through networks in order to make information more accessible and powerful
  • many systems use the Internet to eliminate the effect of distance for example

Q

computer hardware

A

One of the five fundamental components of an information system.

Not all the tangible or physical aspects of a computer system.

It is the electronic components and associated gadgetry that constitute a computer system.

E.g.: tablets, computers, smartphones

Sometimes specific hardware is required in order to access some computer systems

16
Q

software

A

Instructions for computers. One of the five fundamental components of an information system

  • programs or applications that run, or operate, on computer systems
17
Q

data

A

Recorded facts or figures. One of the five fundamental components of an information system.

  • basic building blocks of information, such as facts and observations
  • can be stored on servers that can be located almost anywhere in the world

E.g. student identification numbers, enrollment dates, answers to test questions

18
Q

procedures

A

Instructions for humans. One of the five fundamental components of an information system.

  • instructions or processes that you follow to achieve your desired objective (can be formal or informal, not necessarily written down)

E.g. how you log on to or access the system, how you save your work, how you submit your work

19
Q

people

A

As part of the five-component framework, one of the five fundamental components of an information system; this component includes those who operate and service the computers, those who maintain the data, those who support the networks, and those who use the system.

  • actors that want to achieve a particular outcome by interacting with the system
  • can be the user but also those that maintain the system and those that built it
20
Q

applications

A

computer programs

21
Q

SN

A

Social networking

The social relationships among people with common interests.

22
Q

CRM System

A

Customer Relationship Management System

Uses algorithms and databases to predict customer behaviours

23
Q

network infrastructure

A
  • ties the people together
  • helps many people to be able to access at all hours, on various devices, in different places
24
Q

IM

A

Instant Messaging

25
Q

Blogs

A

Web Logs

26

A

research and development

28
Q

Examples of software and computer services industries

A
  • software publishers
  • business communications services
  • data processing
  • computer system design

service businesses help other businesses more effectively use information systems

How to choose It and implement it is an important skill to have, and there are many people seeking these services

29
Q

ICTC

A

Information and Communications Technology Council of Canada

  • had a report that laid out the challenges for Canadian employers in the ICT sector
  • the report outlined 5 transformative technologies:
    1. augmented reality (1968 invented, 1990 term coined, now popular)
    2. 5G Mobile (started 2018) (5G = 5th generation)
    3. 3D printing (1986-1988)
    4. Blockchain (2009)
    5. Artificial Intelligence (1950)
  • and mentioned the others that have been influential already:
    1. social media
    2. mobile computing (1970s laptop idea)
    3. applications (1980s for clocks and calculators, 2000s for more complex apps)
    4. analytics
    5. cloud technology (2006 term was coined)
  • as well as mentioning what skills and aptitudes are needed to suceed:
    1. technical skills
    2. tech and industry experience
    3. communication and other business skills
30
Q

Moore’s Law

A

A law, created by Gordon Moore, stating that the number of transistors per square inch on an integrated chip doubles every 18 months. Moore’s prediction has proved generally accurate in the 40 years since it was made. Sometimes, this law is stated as the speed of a computer chip doubles every 18 months. While not strictly true, this version gives the gist of the idea.

31
Q

WAN

A

Wide Area Networks

  • becoming more reliable, cheap, and widely available
32
Q

What are four key skills that are essential to succeed?

A
  1. abstract thinking
  2. systems thinking
  3. experimentation
  4. collaboration
