Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is a coastline?
The coastal zone which sediment is moved around between the land, beach and sea
What is the littoral zone?
Contains coastal sediment. Waves, currents and tides move sediment around in this zone.
What is the littoral zone sub divided into?
backshore, foreshore, nearshore and offshore.
What is linked to high tides and storm waves?
The highest sea level line
Where does the base of a wave first encounter friction
shallow offshore waters
What happens at the offshore?
The tidal range affects all parts by determining where wave action takes place
What 2 zones are at the nearshore?
Breaker zone
Surf zone
What processes happen at the nearshore and foreshore?
Deposition and erosion
Constructive and destructive
What processes happen at the backshore?
Weathering and mass movement
Sediment is deposited
What do low energy coastlines look like?
Sandy and estuaries
What do high energy coastlines look like?
Generally rocky coastlines
What are low energy coastlines waves?
Constructive
What are high energy coastlines waves?
Destructive
What are low energy coastline processes?
deposition, transport (long shore drift)
What are high energy coastline processes?
Erosion, transport and mass movement
