Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is an electron?
A negatively charged particle that occupies the space in an atom outside the nucleus
What is a proton
Te region in the center of an atom where most of an atoms mass and positive charge are concentrated
What is a proton?
Positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
What is a neutron?
A neutral particle in the nucleus of an atom.
What is the electron cloud?
The region surrounding an atom’s nucleus where one or more electrons are most likely to be found.
What is an atomic number?
The number of protons in the atom of an element.
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
What is a mass number?
The sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
What is an average atomic mass?
The average mass of the element’s isotopes, weighted according to the abundance of each isotope.
What is radioactive?
Any element that spontaneously emits radiation.
What’s nuclear decay?
A process that occurs when an unstable atomic nucleus changes into a more stable nucleus by emitting radiation.
What is an ion?
An atom that is no longer neutral because it has lost or gained valence electrons.
What is an atom?
The smallest piece of an element that still represents that element.
