What were the border states
Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri
Border states were important to UNION because
1) Missouri- could control parts of the Mississippi River and major routes to the West
2) Kentucky- controlled Ohio River
3) Delaware- close to the key Union city of Philadelphia
4) Maryland- was close to Richmond, the Confederate capital. Washington D. C. lay within the state and if Maryland seceded, North’s capital would be surrounded ( maybe most important border state)
North’s advantages?
- larger population
- more resources
South’a advantages?
- great military leaders
- strong fighting spirit
- war was fought in the South (knew land and how to defend it)
Confederate Goals
- wanted to be an independent country
- thought if they fought long & hard enough, the North would give up
- hoped for support from Britain & France
Union Goals
- wanted to reunite North and South again
- had to invade the South and force Confederate states to give up independence
Union startegy came from who
General Winfield Scott (been a hero in the war with Mexico)
What was the Union strategy called? What was it?
The Anaconda Plan
- 1st, North would blockade Southern parts
- 2nd, North would aim to control Mississippi River (this would split the Confederacy into two parts)
- Also wanted to capture Richmond, VA, capital of Confederacy
What was the Confederate strategy?
- Hold as much territory as possible (Felt if they showed determination to be independent, Northerners would tire of the war)
- tried to win support of Britain and France, who’s economy suffered when war disrupted export of southern cotton
Reasons for enlisting
- patriotism (pride for country)
- to avoid being called a coward
- to have an adventure
Were African Americans allowed to enlist?
In the Union, no at first because worried white troops wouldn’t accept. but later changed their minds
In the Confederacy, no because they didn’t want to give enslaved people weapons. Finally let them in the wars final, desperate days
