How does the role of the pharmacy professional fit with the roles of other types of healthcare professionals?
Pharmacy professionals aren’t physicians—they don’t diagnose or treat diseases. They also aren’t pharmacologists—they don’t research drugs and develop new ones. However, they work closely with physicians to ensure that patients receive the correct drugs.
List the trends that affect the pharmacy profession today.
New drugs on the marketplace challenge pharmacy professionals to monitor all of a patient’s drugs. New drugs also raise a patient’s expectations that drugs will cure his condition. The costs of health care, including drugs, are rising. The Baby Boom generation is aging, which means that more people will become patients and there aren’t enough pharmacy professionals.
Patient education and counseling will play an important role in the future of the pharmacy profession. Pharmacy professionals require good interpersonal skills. They will study human behavior to help them in these tasks. List three times in your life when you showed good interpersonal skills. Maybe you helped a frustrated customer or patiently answered a child’s question.
If you can’t think of any times, think again! Did you ever speak politely to someone who was angry? Have you ever let someone go ahead of you in traffic? Even tipping a waitress or saying “thank you” at the post office counts!
What are the important personal characteristics of a successful pharmacy technician?
Good character, good health; good appearance and hygiene; good math skills; good language skills, good computer skills; good attention to detail; good customer service skills.
