Lesson 01.03 Flashcards
What are the four steps in the formula for finding symbolism?
1.) read the entire text; 2.) list the objects that were repeatedly mentioned as being important to a character in the story; 3.) write a sentence or two for each object, explaining the character’s feeling towards it; 4.) read the sentence(s) and consider what the object could stand for by switching the idea with the name of the object.
Why is it important to read the entire story?
Because symbolism can’t be determined until you do so, as you need to see the big picture before you decide which objects are important to character.
