lesions Flashcards
what are some possible causes of brain damage?
strokes, tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, trauma, etc.
what is aphasia?
language specific deficit as a result of brain damage
what are some symptoms of Broca’s aphasia?
- expressive deficit
- non-fluent speech
- anomia
- problems comprehending, particularly complex sentences
- pronunciation problems
where is Broca’s area?
LH frontal cortex (inferior frontal gyrus)

- speech repetition
where is Wernicke’s area?
temporal lobe (posterior superior temporal gyrus)
what is anomia?
difficulty with word retrieval
what is a syndrome?
a cluster of symptoms
what is single dissociation?
a situation in which a patient is impaired on a particular task but relatively spared on another
what is double dissociation?
two single dissociations that have complementary profiles of ability
what is the transparency assumption?
the assumption that damage to the brain is capable of selectively damaging certain components
what are some symptoms of conduction aphasia?
- problems with repetition
- phonemic paraphrasing
