Purple. the color purple signifies mourning

Ashes are a sign of mourning, deep sorrow, and grief; repentance
What do we mean by receiving and wearing ashes on Ash Wednesday?
It is sorrow for our sins, and a sign of mortality. Shows our humility.
What is said to us when we receive Ashes?
repent and believe in the gospel
Could we “give” something for Lent? What would the purpose of that action be?
Yes. To deepen your faith and pick up good habits. It is more of an effort to “give” something as opposed to “giving up” something.
Why do we sacrifice or “give up” something for Lent?
Reminds us of Jesus’ sacrifice made for us; the physical sacrifice gives us spiritual discipline
What is almsgiving?
Giving something material to those in need
What is the purpose of prayer?
A relationship with God where you both talk and listen
What is the purpose of fasting?
we empty ourselves from food, to fill ourselves up with God
what is the difference between fasting and abstinence?
fasting is to eat less, while abstaining is to refrain from a thing.
Fasting - two small meals equal the third
From what do we abstain and why?
Meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and every friday.
Shows humility since meat was the food of the rich, and fish was the food of the poor
Who must fast? Who must abstain?
People ages 18-59 must fast. People ages 14-59 must abstain
Why is Lent 40 days?
Jesus was in the desert for 40 days. 40 is a symbolic number for trials/tribulations
What is the season after Lent?
Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday)
What is the color of the Triduum? why that color
Red. Shows the passion of Jesus (also blood of martyrs and Holy Spirit)

Holy Thursday - Last supper. washing of the feet
Good Friday - Passion of Jesus; no mass
