Lemert’s Theory - Labelling Theory Flashcards
1
Q
What is Lemerts theory on primary deviation?
A
- deviant acts before they’re publicly labelled
- Lemert argues that there are number of causes of PD that exist and its largely fruitless to enquire into them
2
Q
What is secondary deviation?
A
- the deviant behaviour engaged in subsequently as a exult of being labelled
- this can be condemned by society - could lead to rejection, disapproval or even isolation
- could become internalised - self-fulfilling prophecy
3
Q
What did Lemert argue about secondary deviation?
A
- claimed that societal reaction can be seen as the major cause of deviance
- he argued that studies of deviance should focus on secondary deviance as it presents major consequences
4
Q
What is the A02 for lemerts view?
A
- stuttering and societal reaction: chronic stuttering ( secondary ) is a response to parents reaction to initial minor speech delays defects ( primary )
5
Q
Strengths for lemerts theory?
A
- it shows the importance of the reaction of others in defining and creating deviance
6
Q
Weaknesses of lemert’s theory?
A
- too deterministic: to suggest the reactions of others will shape future deviance
- not everyone actually focuses on the labels
- not all deviance is labelled: so people can still get away from with deviant behaviour without ever being labelled
