Powers of congress
Raise and collect taxes(House of Representatives)
Coin money( House of Representatives)
Declare war(senate)
Punish pirates(senate)
Elastic clause- The necessary and proper clause gives Congress the power to make laws that are necessary (both)
Powers denied to congress
Congress cannot make laws concerning slave trade until 1808
Can not suspend writ of habeas corpus- Must be told and set trial for a crime committed
No ex post facto law- cannot punish a person for act committed before there was a law against it
No titles of nobility
Powers denied to the states
Cannot make treaties
Cannot pass any laws that the federal government is not allowed to pass
Whip
A person whose purpose is to make sure how members of their political party are voting and to make sure they vote on a bill
Incumbent
A person who is already in the office and is trying to be re-elected
Challenger
A person who is running for office against and incumbent
